Swamp Cooler Maintenance Tips

Swamp coolers need to be watched closely to be sure they are working at their best. Coolers need to be checked regularly so that they run correctly and continue to deliver cool air. If you want to keep your cooler in top form you need to take care of it properly.

Imagine your swamp cooler like it is a car. A car requires its oil to be changed, its tires rotated, its battery recharged, etc to make sure that it is taken care of. An HVAC motor also needs to regular attention for it to work its best.

When using your swamp cooler turn on the water pump at least five minutes before you turn on the fan, so that the pads are saturated with water first. It will work best when it is used when temperatures are 85 degrees or higher. This will save on water usage and energy, both of which will save you money.

Your swamp cooler will need to be given proper maintenance. Start by checking out the fan belt. Make sure it is not sagging, and if it is by more than an inch you should replace it.

Cooler pads also need to be in good shape. There also should not be any cracks, holes, or leaks in the casement or the tray of the swamp cooler. If you notice any of these problems an air conditioning repairmen should be called.

Next, be sure the water level is where it should be. The water should reach just below the top of the cooler's tray. If it isn't, you can adjust it with the float arm. Finish the maintenance check by making certain everything else is in working order, such as the pump and motor.

You will also have to clean out the tray of the cooler once the weather turns colder. If there is any buildup deposits left in the tray they will harden during the winter months and become nearly impossible to remove come summertime. Once the tray is cleaned, drain out all the water completely.

Once that is done turn off the water line to the cooler and turn it off for the Winter. This will prevent it from freezing the water line. You should also check the panels every month or so to make sure debris doesn't get inside. You don't want the pads to get ruined by any leaves or debris that get stuck in there.

It's important to have a trustworthy plumber to take care of your plumbing needs and air conditioning, and heating
