There are many different holidays through out the year and most are children friendly holidays. This is because as we grow into adults we do not need the fairy tales and excitement of opening a gift on Christmas morning. These holidays are so that our children can have fun and learn important life lessons. You are probably wondering what life lesson a child can learn from Christmas.

Well that is simple they learn the life lesson that giving is so much better than receiving. Of course as kids they do not realize this, all they know is that they want gifts and they do not want to give gifts to anyone else. Some of us are lucky enough to have kids that have a kind heart and learn early on that giving is better than receiving.

Christmas is a very kid friendly holiday. We buy our children lots of toys and fill their stockings with goodies. Another great holiday for children is Easter. Children love coloring the Easter eggs and then hunting for them. They get to dress up in their prettiest clothes and wake up to an Easter basket that the Easter bunny left for them.

The entire family can enjoy Easter together. It is so much fun just watching your little ones run around searching for hidden Easter eggs. That is probably the most innocent thing in this world. Children also enjoy Halloween as a holiday. They get to dress up as beautiful princesses or scary monsters. They get to go trick or treating and get free candy. However, this is a holiday that has to be very closely watched over. There are people in our world that would hurt our children if given the chance.

When treat or treating be sure to stay in a neighborhood where you know the neighbors. Churches are even starting to have trunk or treats where kids go around to different cars in a church parking lot and get candy from the members of the church.

This is a much safer alternative than walking dark streets at night and knocking on strangers doors for candy. We tell our kids from a young age to never talk to people they don't know and to never take candy from someone they don't know but when Halloween comes around we take them to strangers houses and let them get candy. This is not a very logical or safe approach.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that kids celebrate. It is a Holiday that last for eight straight days and nights. The children get a gift on each night. They celebrate this holiday by lighting a hanukkiyah, and it is lit every night for the entire eight nights. During this holiday Jewish children play a game called dreidel.

Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates that miracle of oil so they enjoy eating fried foods during their holiday. We have a lot of different holidays that are child friendly. As parents we all do our best to make these holidays memorable for our children. If you ask any child what their favorite holiday is the answer you will mostly receive is Hanukkah and Christmas.

Stacie Gilmore, from ELK, Environmental Learning For Kids, joined Allen Cardoza, from Answers4TheFamilyBlog.com, on L.A. Talk Radio on April 4th 2011, to discuss the work her organization does.

In 1996, two wildlife biologists, Scott and Stacie Gilmore established ELK, a Denver-based organization. They wanted to educate Colorado's urban youth about science, math, leadership and careers. They saw a growing need to introduce children from ages 8-18 to the great outdoors.

ELK was founded because all young people deserve strong educational support, good role models and opportunities for positive community action in order to become engaged, productive and successful members of society. It reaches out to students who have been traditionally overlooked and under-encouraged in science careers.

The highly successful Colorado program is a hands-on, active program that provides opportunities to experience and learn about the great outdoors. It ignites curiosity and inspires youth in their academic studies, leadership development and career exploration.

Participant in ELK:

* Through overnight wilderness trips, hands-on field activities, local excursions, develop confidence and self-esteem.

* Begin to succeed in school because, they find long-term mentoring by biologists and other science professionals.

* Stay connected to a learning community that enhances their life skills and leadership through close-knit relationships.

Each outing includes diverse elements like science and environmental education, career exploration and job skill development, and, of course, some recreation.

Since 1996, ELK has successfully achieved its goals by providing both classroom and experiential field activities to more than 95,000 youth and their families across the Northeast corridor of Denver. ELK offers a mosaic of programs that serve as stepping stones for all young people: our future leaders and engaged citizens of tomorrow.

ELK mentors youth through engaging science education and leadership development programs that provide a real-life context for learning. Youth increase their academic science skills, become involved in their neighborhoods and get exposure to careers in the field of natural resources.
