Popular Costumes for Halloween

by Guest Author

Popular Halloween costumes change from year to year. Their popularity is influenced by all the popular movies and TV shows, music superstars, politics and cartoon characters. Each October, the National Retail Federation comes up with a list of the well-liked costumes for the up coming season. What ends up on the "most popular" list depends on what is hot in the media for the current year. Some other popular Halloween costumes are long-time classics such as fairies, cheerleaders, vampires and clowns. Disney characters are eternal favorites.

Costumes for teen and pre-teens are influenced by the darker side of Halloween. They seem to like anything from the Gothic sub-culture - skulls, black, darkness. Popular costumes range from Vampires and Witches to Fallen Angels and Demons.

Most parents choose sweet costumes for their babies. Disney Characters and Animals are at the top of the list. As young children begin to decide on their own costumes, they are influenced by TV, Movies and Cartoon Characters. Princesses, Fairies, Spider Man, Witch, Star Wars, Pumpkin, Ghost and Power Ranger are the most popular costume choices.

Adult costume choices are sometimes influenced by whether or not they need to be a couples costume or not. The choices are more limited if you choose to go in couples costumes. Being creative can help you pair up 2 seemingly unrelated costumes. Online costumes shops have some great choices if you need to go as couples - Bowling Ball and Pin, Matador and Bull; Plug and Socket, Vampire and Vampira.

If you decide to make your own costumes, you will need to be creative. Homemade costumes don't need to involve a lot of sewing. Checkout old clothes you may have or visit a second hand store. You can find accessories to use around the house. Get the child involved and the project will be more fun.

The safety of your children while they are trick or treating is very important. Stitch some reflective material around the cuffs and ankles of their costumes. If your child has a mask as part of their costume, ensure that they can see where they are going. Using makeup instead of a mask is always a good solution. I also advise my children to not eat any of their goodies until they reach back home. Adults should inspect the loot before children start to eat.

Dressing up our pet dog or cat is something fun that we like to do. Whether your pet goes with you as you trick or treat or it stays at home to greet the trick-or-treaters, they should be allowed to participate in the festivities. Halloween is meant to be a fun day for everyone.

Be sure to research what costume is best for you. You can look in retail stores, catalogs and on the internet. Your choices are unlimited. Once you decide on a costume to buy, it is best to purchase it right away so that you are not disappointed when they are sold out, especially if you take a special size.
