Ice Cream Sundaes

by Guest Author

The sundae is a favorite ice cream dessert among many Americans. It usually consists of one or two scoops of ice cream topped with syrup or a sauce and other toppings like whipped cream, nuts or cherries. There are a number of US locations which have claimed to be the birthplace of the ice cream sundae including: Evanston, Illinois; Plainfield, Illinois; New Orleans; Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; Ithaca, New York & Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

When it comes to the invention of the 'sundae' name, one theme refers to the sinfulness of ice cream soda and the need to produce a substitute for the popular treat for consumption on Sunday. In a book called The First Food Empire (2000) Peter Bird writes that the name 'sundae' was adopted from Illinois state's early prohibition of ice cream consumption on Sundays since ice cream with a topping obscuring the main product was not deemed to be ice cream.

Today there are so many different kinds of ice cream sundaes. In the original sundae one will find vanilla ice cream topped with a flavored syrup, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Most original sundaes are named for their flavor of syrup: cherry sundae, chocolate sundae, strawberry sundae, and so on. Soft serve ice cream is often used on a classic sundae as opposed to regular ice cream.

A hot fudge sundae is pretty self explanatory. It's a variation of the classic sundae but using hot chocolate sauce instead. It can be made with any flavor of ice cream but still has the whipped cream, nuts and single bright-red maraschino cherry as toppings. There is also the caramel sundae which is about the same but using hot caramel sauce in place of the fudge. Occasionally peanut butter or other similar products are used to do the same. A popular combination of vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, caramel sauces and toasted pecans is called the turtle sundae. The black and white sundae features a scoop of chocolate ice cream with marshmallow topping and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. The brownie sundae is a rich sundae made with brownies, whipped cream, hot fudge, nuts and a cherry. Caramel is used to replace the brownie in what's referred to as a "Blondie".

We can't forget the banana split. A banana split is three sundaes in one side by side between two halves of a banana that is sliced lengthwise. It includes strawberry ice cream topped with strawberry syrup, chocolate ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream, topped with crushed pineapple. Each scoop in the banana split is individually garnished with whipped cream and a cherry. Ever heard of a bananas foster? This sundae features a flamb of bananas with rum, banana liquor and spices.
