Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. Some believe them to be some type of spell while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Some of the common myths associated with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.
Hypnosis has no link with any sort of dark arts. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very simple to acquire and practice. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others often refuse to acknowledge it. They believe that the subjects who have been under hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.
Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is completely aware of his environment. That person is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.
Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of humanity is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in character and disposition. People differ in their characters and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different people.
Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, meditation is essentially a personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Trance is again a mental state sans any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis technique.
Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a good amount of of motivation in a person.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of a person, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
